What Heymondo is

Heymondo is a travel insurance brand run by a registered insurance distributor, not an insurer. The footer of its pages says "Heymondo is a trading name of Smart Insurance Correduría de Seguros, S.L., a Spanish company with its registered office" in Barcelona, registered "in the Administrative Registry of Insurance and Reinsurance Distributors of the Directorate-General for Insurance and Pension Funds (DGSFP) under registration code J3422, acting under the supervision of said authority." The about page says "Heymondo was born in 2017 with the mission of simplifying travel insurance" and that the company designs its own products. The homepage refers to "Partnering with the best insurance providers" but its pages do not name the underwriting carrier.

It sells three products: International Travel Insurance for a single "leisure or business trip," Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance covering every trip of up to 60 days in a year, and Long Stay Travel Insurance "For your 90+ day trips." Each is bought online and managed in the Heymondo app, and the site cites "3M+ insured travelers."

What the International plan covers

The International Travel Insurance page lays out a benefit schedule. Its headline figures are "Medical expenses up to $10,000,000 USD," "Luggage theft and damage up to $2,500 USD" and "Trip cancellation up to $7,000 USD." The medical line covers "medical expenses abroad for sudden illness or accidental injury, including hospitalization, prescription drugs, and inpatient physical therapy," and the page says it also includes medical transportation and repatriation. Emergency dental treatment is covered "to relieve acute and sudden pain," as are extra lodging costs for a medical quarantine prescribed by a doctor and outpatient physiotherapy. If the traveler is hospitalized for longer than 7 days, the plan pays a return ticket and lodging for a family member to join them. Repatriation of the deceased and of insured companions is listed as included.

Cancellation and interruption share the $7,000 limit, and the page attaches a timing rule to the cancellation cover: "it must be purchased no longer than 7 days after having made the first trip booking." The site describes the covered reasons as "severe illness or death of the insured person or a family member." Early return is covered if a family member at home is hospitalized or dies, and trip resumption is covered after a medical repatriation. Travel disruption, which takes in public transport delays and missed connecting flights, is up to $1,500. The same page lists search and rescue and natural disaster costs up to $10,000, personal liability up to $60,000, accidental death or disability up to $60,000 and rental car excess up to $500.

On the deductible, the International page says "Our Heymondo insurances don't have a deductible," while the same page also mentions options "to save even more by choosing a policy with a deductible." The plan page states the exclusions it does name directly: "policies do not cover routine medical checkups or pre-existing medical conditions," with a full list in the General Conditions.

Tiers, add-ons and the annual plan

The Costa Rica page shows that the International cover is sold in three tiers with different limits. "Heymondo Medical" starts "From $2.49/day" with medical assistance of $10,000,000 and cancellation and interruption of $7,000. "Heymondo Top" starts at $2.72/day with medical assistance of $5,000,000, baggage of $1,700 and cancellation of $3,500. "Heymondo Premium" starts at $3.02/day with medical assistance of $10,000,000, baggage of $2,500 and cancellation of $7,000. The same page gives "Repatriation and early return up to $500,000 USD" as a headline figure for Costa Rica trips.

Two add-ons are optional on the International plan. Electronic equipment is covered "up to 50% of the baggage coverage," extendable "up to 100% of the baggage coverage in the Heymondo Top and Premium plans." Adventure sports are handled in two lists. The base plans already include many activities, among them surfing, snorkeling, zip lines and "trekking at altitudes below 3,000 meters." The Adventure sports add-on extends cover to activities such as white-water rafting, canyoning, diving "less than 20 meters deep," bungee jumping and "trekking at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters." A cruise add-on covers medical assistance needed on board a cruise liner.

The Annual Multi-Trip plan carries the same headline limits of $10,000,000 medical, $2,500 baggage and $7,000 cancellation, over "12 months of covered travel." Its rule is that "each individual stay abroad must be under 60 consecutive days," which the page explains means the traveler "must return to your country of residence at least once every 60 days." Two terms differ from the International page. The annual plan "has an excess of $250 USD for medical expenses coverage only," and its personal liability line is up to $2,000,000. The annual page also says "zones of armed conflict are excluded from coverage."

Who can buy it and how claims work

Heymondo sells worldwide rather than to one country's residents. The International page says the insurance "is available to anyone. We cover travelers from all over the world while outside their home country." Age is the main limit. For the International plan, "Age limit is 69 years old for travels up to 29 days. For 30 days or more, age limit is 49." The Annual Multi-Trip page gives "Age limit is 49 years old." Travel dates can be changed before departure by contacting the company.

In an emergency the site says the first step is to call the 24/7 assistance platform on the number printed in the policy, which "will get you an appointment in the nearest medical center or hospital," adding that "Most of the time, you won't even have to worry about paying medical bills." The app adds "24/7 medical chat and video consultation, free assistance calls, and claims management," lets the traveler "Open claims and attach documentation from the app in just a few steps," and keeps policy documents available offline. General customer service runs by chat, email and WhatsApp text, "Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 18:00 pm (GMT +1)."

Who it suits

Heymondo fits a traveler under its age limits who wants a high published medical limit, an app for medical chat and claims, and the option to add adventure sports or electronics cover as needed. The annual plan fits someone making repeated trips of under 60 days who is 49 or younger. It fits poorly for older travelers, for anyone with a pre-existing condition, and for a buyer who wants the underwriting insurer named on the sales pages before purchase.
